What Is Implantation Bleeding? Causes and Symptoms

Pregnancy causes many changes, and bleeding is one of the earliest signs. Light bleeding or spotting occurs when the fertilised egg attaches to the uterine lining, this is generally at 6 - 12 days post-ovulation. Yet, it is not for all women, but it is often confused with periods. They are generally light periods and can differentiate the colour of regular menstrual cycles because they appear as pink, brown or light red spots. Early signs of pregnancy, such as breast tenderness and fatigue, implantation bleeding is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy.  In such a case, using plant-based panty liners gives gentle protection during this early stage, making it easier to notice subtle changes in flow and colour.

What Is Implantation Bleeding?

Early pregnancy can cause very light spotting, which is lighter than a regular period. It is known as implantation bleeding and is often confused with menstruation because it looks like period flow. Sometimes, it can even appear close to your expected period, which makes you really confused. Using Bliss Natural long plant-based panty liners at this time keeps you comfortable and makes it easier to monitor any small spots since they absorb light flow without discomfort. If you don’t know if the spotting is related to pregnancy, getting a test or talking to a doctor is your best bet.

When Does Implantation Bleeding Occur?

Implant bleeding happens according to the natural timeline of a regular 28-day cycle of menstruation. Knowing this sequence can help you figure out when it’s more likely that the spotting is related to early pregnancy.

Day 1: Start of Menstrual Period

Day 1 of menstruation starts when the uterus sheds its lining from the previous cycle. This is because hormone levels are resetting with the start of a new period. The body is getting ready for ovulation again and also preparing for the possibility of getting pregnant in the next few days as fertility signs change.

Day 14: Ovulation

Approximately on Day 14, the ovary releases a mature egg, beginning the fertile window.  The egg lives for as long as 24 hours. If sperm are there at that time, they can be fertilised, which is why ovulation is the best time for getting pregnant.

Days 15 to 20: Fertilisation

Fertilisation typically occurs within 24 hours of ovulation when sperm meets the egg. The fertilised egg is called a zygote, and it divides into a mass of cells as it travels towards the uterus. This phase represents the beginning of pre-embryonic development prior to the embryo's attachment to the uterine wall.

Days 20 to 24: Implantation

During Days 20 to 24, the embryo attaches to the uterine lining- this can cause a very light spotting. Many women use plant-based long panty liners during this stage to manage tiny spots comfortably while monitoring changes. Implantation occurs around 6–7 days after fertilisation and is considered to be a sign of early pregnancy.

Symptoms Of Implantation Bleeding

Mood Swings

Hormone changes early in pregnancy can lead to mood swings. A woman can be happy, nervous, irritated or tearful within a short period. These hormonal changes and mood swings are perfectly normal in the first few weeks of pregnancy and are most likely accompanied by other signs of early pregnancy.

Nausea

Numerous women suffer nausea, also referred to as morning sickness, in the early stages of pregnancy. It can happen any time of the day, and be anywhere from a light feeling of nausea to a more intense one. Although nausea may not be experienced by all women, it is one of the earliest symptoms indicating that hormone levels are changing.

Headaches

Early pregnancy headaches can be caused by increased levels of hormones and blood flow in the body. Such headaches are mild but can have an onset of several days in the first weeks. They typically occur with other early pregnancy symptoms such as spotting, mood swings, or tiredness, and indicate embryo implantation.

Back Pain

Mild back pain or discomfort may be experienced as the body changes to accommodate early pregnancy. Ligaments and muscles are slightly expanded to accommodate the growing uterus. It is different from menstrual cramps, and it is mild, temporary, and a normal part of the process of implantation in the uterus.

Different Between Implantation Bleeding Vs. Period Bleeding:

Period Bleeding

Implantation Bleeding

It normally takes less than 8 days.

Bleeding typically stops within 24 to 48 hours.

The first couple of days were heavy flow, then it went to normal, and the last couple of days were light flow, then stopped.

And it's typically just a very, very light flow only.

You can get strong uterine cramps along with your periods.

Uterine cramping is much milder or nonexistent.

FAQ’s

Can Implant Bleeding Fill A Pad?

Implant bleeding is usually very light and doesn’t fill a pad. It often looks like light spotting or pink/brown discharge. If the bleeding is heavier and fills a pad, it may be something else, and you should see a doctor.

Can I Take A Pregnancy Test During Implantation Bleeding?

You can take a pregnancy test during implantation bleeding, but it might be too early to detect the pregnancy hormone (hCG). For more accurate results, it’s best to wait a few days after the bleeding stops or until you miss your period.

Can You Bleed Heavily For 2 Days And Be Pregnant?

Heavy bleeding for two days is probably not implant bleeding and might be your period or another issue, like a miscarriage. If you're unsure, it's a good idea to talk to a healthcare provider to check for any problems.

When Do Pregnancy Symptoms Start?

Pregnancy symptoms often start 4 to 6 weeks after conception, usually around the time of a missed period. Early signs include nausea, breast soreness, feeling tired, and needing to urinate more often, but these symptoms can vary for each person.

What Are The Signs Of Failed Implantation?

Signs of failed implantation can include a period-like bleed after a missed period, no pregnancy symptoms, and continuing your menstrual cycle. Some may have cramping or spotting, but it can be hard to tell apart from a normal period.
